Article Summary
Women in the country of Yemen are often viewed as most likely to die in childbirth and being the least empowered women in the world in both the Middle East and the World. Recently, several protests have occurred in the country of Yemen by female activists against the president, Ali Abdullah. Many women have been threatened and attacks have occurred at protests with at least 109 deaths. Men have thrown rocks and even used guns against peaceful female protesters. To this day, Yemen still remains a society where women have low social status, barely any role in government, and can be legally beaten by their abusive husbands. These reasons are what are driving the protests that are occurring today.

Thoughts on the Article
This article makes me feel bad for all women. No one deserves different rights because of the way they were born. It amazes me how several societies still give women restrictions that countries like the United States has forbidden since the early 1900's such as the right to vote and domestic violence. The most surprising fact to me was that domestic violence is legal in Yemen. It is legal for a man to beat any woman to a bloody pulp. It also saddens me how all those women died who peacefully fought for more rights. The movements in Yemen remind me of those of African Americans in the 1960's. If they received their rights, women in Yemen should too.

Why Religion is Important to Culture
In Yemen, Shariah Law is practiced meaning the Islam is associated with culture. This results in mainly negative with few positive stereotypes being associated with Yemen. Religions is the reasons why consuming alcohol and pork is forbidden and why Arabic is the most widely spoken language. Shariah Law has also created the mistreatment of women which is seen as a violation of human rights in developed countries such as the U.S. Yemen is the perfect example of how religion can influence every aspect of a societies' culture from food, language, education, and rights. In many places in the world like Yemen, there is no separation between religion and culture.
